Teaching

We currently have projects in primary schools, secondary schools, adult education, orphanages, pre-schools and tsunami related projects.

If you would like more information on any of these opportunities please go to the right hand menu and click on your placement of choice.

Do I need to be a professional teacher?
No. It is of course a huge advantage if you are a teaching professional, have a TEFL or have experience of leading youth groups, but we do not look for formal qualifications. Many people who are considering going into teaching have found our volunteer projects to be invaluable.

What do you look for in a teaching volunteer?
A good level of general education, enthusiasm, dedication and a lot of exciting ideas. In many of the schools teachers have not received training and so do not know how to teach effectively. Students are taught by rote, meaning that a major challenge facing volunteers is to help them to use their imaginations.

Do you offer teacher training courses?
Yes. We offer weekend courses in Oxford focused on teaching with local resources in developing countries. This course is open to non-volunteers and takes place every three months. Present costs are £100 or volunteers and £150 for others. For more information please click here.

What about using my specific skills?
We can often make use of specific skills in areas such as IT, sport, science and arts and crafts so please do let us know of any specific areas of interest. We will do our best to find a project in need of your skills.
