Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka has a wealth of natural beauty combined with a fabulous climate and some of the friendliest people on earth!!
We have been working in Sri Lanka since 2002 and current projects focus on community based teaching.
Following the tragic tsunami of 26th December 2004, there is no better time to make a meaningful contribution to this wonderful country.
1. What projects are available in Sri Lanka?
Temples, schools and an orphanage near Kandy -
In the beautiful hill region of Kandy we are working in various rural Buddhist temples. These temples provide not only a place to worship but also a community centre. In Manikhinna, Digana, Sarasavigama and Ranawane, volunteers work in pre-schools and primary education while in Pilimathalawa, volunteers offer primary school and adult education classes involving many of the monks. Volunteers also help out at Bowalawatte School and a Buddhist orphanage at Sarana Savena.
Schools on the south coast -
Helping students regain some normality in their lives after the devastating 2004 tsunami has been the main focus of the work in this area. Current projects involve work in primary schools on the south west coast.
2. Are there any special requirements for volunteers in Sri Lanka?
Like all of our projects there is a minimum age requirement of 18. An interest in Buddhism would be an advantage as volunteers work with local people, often in the temples, giving a fascinating insight into another culture. More than anything, a flexible, open mind and a sensitivity towards local cultural values are essential.
