Kenya

RocFotoLying on the equator, Kenya is a great place to spend time in. Its diverse geography results in a range of natural habitats, while its history of migration and conquests has brought about a colourful ethnic mix. The climate in the region we work is very pleasant, without extremes of heat.

Following the success of our programmes in Tanzania, we were invited by the Office of the President to send volunteers to the Southern region close to Bomet.

1. What projects are available in Kenya?

Teaching in one of 2 different secondary schools in the Bomet region. This is the Maasai Mara region and known
for its beautiful countryside. As the schools are all secondary schools, classes are taught in English and volunteers
can teach a variety of subjects. This could include English, maths, history, science, sports and music depending
on volunteers' qualifications and needs of the schools; it is even possible to help the students with some computer skills.

In addition to teaching at school, past volunteers have got involved in organising music and dance groups (one of
them won the regional finals!) and in many sporting activities. This is a region of talented long distance runners and
some of our volunteers have taken part with the older students.

2. Are there any special requirements for volunteers in Kenya?

We have a minimum age of 22 for our projects in Kenya but, if you are 18 - 21, please look at the other programs we
have available in Gambia, Asia and South America. No prior experience of teaching is necessary and the students, anxious to improve their standards, are highly motivated!

Accommodation is in teachers' houses in the schools. Volunteers can share cooking facilities or eat at the school.
