Teaching
in India
Our teaching programme in India currently offers volunteers the chance to work in two different regions:
Kalimpong/Darjeeling is based in North East India, about three and a half hours away from Bagdogra in Siliguri, where the people are largely Nepali and the terrain is similar to Helambu. This is one of the most beautiful parts of the Himalayan foothills, long used as a hill station refuge for those living in the heat of the plains! The famous Darjeeling railway is one of the highest operating in the world, and Kalimpong itself is right on the border of Sikkim, famous for its beauty and isolation.
Ladakh or "Little Tibet", as it is sometimes called, is a remote and starkly beautiful region in the Indian Himalayas. The purity of Buddha's teachings has been well preserved since the first century.
We are working with indigenous people to help them promote their skills and knowledge. Our programmes are not linked with any religious or political movement. No specific qualifications are needed except a good level of general education, lots of enthusiasm and an open-mind. Volunteers can work for various lengths of time and at various locations. We can generally arrange timetables to suite the skills of the volunteers and the needs of the school.
