Healthcare

We currently have projects working with Leprosy care, and disabled children in India and a rural clinic serving nine villages in Nepal. A variety of different skills are needed and all of the placements will offer a fascinating insight into a local culture and local healthcare needs.

If you would like more information on any of these opportunities please go to the right hand menu and click on your placement of choice.

Do I need to be a medical professional?
Yes. For all of our medical placements we do require a minimum of three years professional experience. However if you have recently graduated from medical school please do contact us as occasionally placements are available, especially when in placement with a more experienced volunteer.

What do you look for in a volunteer?
As well as a background in healthcare we also need enthusiasm, dedication and a lot of exciting ideas. You are almost bound to find shortages of materials and so managing in difficult circumstances as well as flexibility, cultural sensitivity and a good sense of humour are also very important!!

Do the placements have good medical facilities?
This varies greatly depending on the placement. The Leprosy Care Centre in Orissa, India is well funded and has up to date equipment. The disabled centre in Bankura, India is moderately well funded although there are some gaps in materials. The health clinic in Nepal currently does not have much resource. Although improvements are taking place the whole time this still represents the biggest challenge.

What about the language barrier?
In all of the projects English speakers are available to help with translation. This aspect is likely to be hard at times but not impossible! Volunteers often find that they start to pick up the local language pretty quickly!
