Chile - Other schools
El Liceo (Paihuano)
The recently opened Liceo has 120 pupils from ages 15-18 & is minutes from the primary school. Volunteers work with a teacher, as classes are long and, although keen to learn, the students can be boisterous! The syllabus books are incredibly advanced for the students, who until now have had little exposure to English, so volunteers must be adaptable.
Cochiguaz
Cochiguaz is situated in a side valley, off the main Elqui valley, 19km from Monte Grande. Here there is a very small rural school with 18 children and one teacher. Cochiguaz is well-known for its artistic residents and those seeking an alternative lifestyle - many claim the area has a ‘special energy’. It is also famous for its sightings of UFOs!
Alcohuaz
Alcohuaz is 12km beyond Pisco Elqui, at the southern end of the valley, and has a small rural school of 22 pupils, all under the care of one dedicated teacher. As with all the ‘rural’ schools the teaching here is genuinely personalised in nature, as the children cover several year groups and varying levels of need. Previously children had to travel 6 km for English classes! Volunteers could also help with computing and drama.
Horcón
Another tiny school between Pisco Elqui and La Ortiga, with just 17 children between 1st-4th grade. Volunteers work with 4th grade, which currently consists of 4 children! The headteacher would also like volunteers to work with the Kindergarden in the future.
Tres Cruces & Quebrada Paihuano
At the opposite end of the Valley, between Paihuano and Vicuña these two little schools have 15 and 12 children respectively. Volunteers are very popular here.
