Chile - Teaching in Monte Grande

Monte Grande SchoolMonte Grande is approximately 100 km (about 65 miles) inland from the city of La Serena, which is on the coast, 450 km north of Santiago.

The Escuela Gabriela Mistral has approximately 190 pupils between the ages of 5 and 15, of whom 48 (24 boys and 24 girls) are weekly boarders.  There is one class per level and the school follows the Chilean national curriculum, of which, from 5th Grade (10 years +), a foreign language is an element.  A permanent English teacher has recently been introduced into Monte Grande.

The support of English-speaking volunteers in planning and conducting lessons is invaluable.  In addition, volunteers may wish to conduct small conversational classes with those students who either struggle or excel with normal classes.

Monte Grande accepts children from diverse socio-economic backgrounds and though academically low in standard, it provides a variety of extra- and co-curricular activities.    There is no extra funding to provide for boarding facilities, so resources are more lacking than the other 2 schools.

As with all projects in Chile volunteers live with a local family.
