Chile - Teaching in Paihuano
Paihuano is the principal village in the Comuna and houses the Municipalidad, where all administrative offices, including that of local education, are situated. It has the oldest population of the 3 towns, so can appear quite sleepy.
The Escuela Cielo Claro is one of the best schools in Chile and has even won academic awards. It has 246 pupils between the ages of 4 and 14 years old and 16 teachers. It is well equipped with a study room and a computer room.
The school first took volunteers in the second half of 2004, and programmes have been highly successful, with volunteers taking on other activities, such as painting the entire playground! Again a permanent English teacher has recently been introduced into the school, so volunteers offer crucial support in all aspects of teaching.
As with all projects in Chile volunteers live with a local family.
