Business Development

We are sending skilled business professionals to work with local partners in several of our partner countries.

Our approach is to provide common sense, no-nonsense advice and solutions, focussed mainly on small firms. Much of our work is with businesses employing just one or two employees and providing basic products and services. It is here that we can really make a difference with the experience, energy and enthusiasm that our volunteers bring to their task.

If you would like more information on any of these opportunities please go to the right hand menu and click on your placement of choice.

How much experience do I need?
We have roles for managers with wide ranging skills of a general nature as well as specialists in disciplines such as finance or marketing. Previous volunteers have typically come from middle/senior management positions, seeking a change of scene or a career break. A minimum of 4 years business experience would normally be a minimum

What do you look for in a business volunteer?
As with most of our programmes, we like a good level of education, enthusiasm, dedication and a lot of exciting ideas! Most of all, we like a positive, 'can do' attitude which spins off on our partners and moves things along. An ability to share skills is key. But so is a sense of humour! Incidentally, although business planning is always helpful, this is not the time and place for complex five year plans; its usually, tomorrow's plan that concerns a small business in Tanzania!

Do companies value the experience your volunteers obtain when they return?
Very much so. Whilst many see this as a short career break mid career, for some it is a more of a career development move. And many volunteers have gone on to rapid internal promotion or exciting new jobs on their return.
